Jiren (“Jiren,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a ride-hailing and delivery platform operating in Ethiopia. This Privacy Policy outlines how we collect, use, and share personal information when you use our mobile applications, websites, and services (collectively, the “Jiren Platform”). The Jiren Platform is designed solely to connect passengers and drivers, and all wallet functionality exists only to facilitate ride commissions.
We are committed to operating in full compliance with the Personal Data Protection Proclamation No. 1321/2024 and other applicable laws in Ethiopia. Your use of the Jiren Platform is also governed by our Terms of Service.
1. The Information We Collect
When you use the Jiren Platform, we collect the information you provide, usage information, and information about your device. We also collect information about you from other sources, such as third-party services and optional programs you participate in, which we may combine with other information we have about you.
A. Information You Provide to Us
- Account Registration: When you create an account with Jiren, we collect the information you provide, such as your name, email address, phone number, and an optional profile photo.
- Driver Onboarding: If you apply to be a driver, we collect the information you provide in your application, including your name, email address, phone number, physical address, government identification number, driver’s license information, vehicle information, and car insurance information. We also collect the payment information you provide, such as bank routing numbers, which are used to process driver payments.
- Emergency Contacts (Optional): Our application allows you to add trusted contacts to be notified in case of an emergency via our in-app safety features. The app will request permission to access your device's contact list to help you select these contacts.
- Contact data is not uploaded to our servers or shared with third parties.
- Contact access is used only locally on your device for the sole purpose of enabling this safety functionality.
- This feature is optional, and you can choose whether or not to grant permission. Your privacy and data security are important to us. We do not collect, store, or transmit any contact data beyond what is necessary for this specific safety feature.
- Ratings and Feedback: When you rate and provide feedback about riders or drivers, we collect all the information you provide.
- Communications: When you contact us or we contact you, we collect any information you provide, including the contents of the messages or attachments you send.
B. Information We Collect Automatically
- Location Information: To facilitate great rides, the Jiren Platform collects precise location data (via GPS and WiFi).
- Riders: We collect your device's precise location when you open and use the Jiren app, including while the app is running in the background from the time you request a ride until it ends.
- Drivers: We collect your device's precise location when you are in driver mode, including while the app is running in the background. We also collect precise location for a limited time after you exit driver mode to detect ride incidents.
- Usage Information: We collect information about your use of the Jiren Platform, including trip details like the date, time, destination, distance, route, and fare. We also collect information about your interactions with our apps and websites.
- Device Information: We collect information about the devices you use to access the Jiren Platform, including the device model, IP address, operating system, and unique device identifiers. If you are a driver, we may also collect mobile sensor data from your device, such as speed and acceleration.
- Communications Between Riders and Drivers: We work with a third party to facilitate in-app phone calls and messages between riders and drivers without sharing either party's actual phone number. We collect metadata about these communications (such as the participants' phone numbers, the date, and time), but we do not record the content of these communications.
- Cookies, Analytics, and Third-Party Technologies: We collect information using “cookies,” tracking pixels, and other third-party technologies to understand how you use our platform, to improve your experience, and to save your preferences.
C. Information We Collect from Third Parties
We may receive information about you from third-party services to enhance our platform. This includes:
- Payment Processors: Information from third-party payment gateways like Chapa and Addis Pay to confirm transaction details when you top up your wallet.
- Verification Agencies: Information from third-party verification agencies to conduct background checks during driver onboarding.
- Referral Programs: If someone refers you to Jiren, we will collect information about you from that referral, including your name and contact information.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your personal information to:
- Provide the Jiren Platform: We use your information to verify your identity, connect you with rides, facilitate deliveries, process payments, and communicate with you about your experience.
- Maintain Security and Safety: We use your information to authenticate users, verify that drivers and their vehicles meet safety requirements, investigate and resolve incidents, and prevent fraud.
- Provide Customer Support: We use your information to investigate and assist you in resolving questions or issues you have regarding the Jiren Platform.
- Improve the Jiren Platform: We perform research, testing, and analysis to develop new products, features, and services.
- Respond to Legal Proceedings: We may use your personal information to respond to legal demands or obligations imposed by law, government entities, or other regulatory bodies in Ethiopia.
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. To make the Jiren Platform work, we share your information with other users, third parties, and service providers as described below.
A. Sharing Between Jiren Users
- Riders and Drivers:
- Rider information shared with Driver: Upon a ride request, we share the rider's pickup location, name, and profile photo. During the ride, we share the rider's destination and any additional stops.
- Driver information shared with Rider: Upon a driver accepting a ride, we share the driver's name, profile photo, real-time location, and the vehicle's make, model, color, and license plate.
- Lost or Found Items: If you report a lost or found item, we will seek to connect you with the relevant rider or driver, including sharing contact information with your consent.
B. Sharing With Third-Party Service Providers
We share your personal information with service providers to fulfill business purposes, such as:
- Processing payments with gateways like Chapa and Addis Pay.
- Verifying the identity of users during the onboarding process.
- Providing analytics services to improve the Jiren Platform.
4. Payments & Wallet
- All wallet top-ups are processed securely by trusted third-party providers such as Chapa and Addis Pay. We do not collect or store your payment card numbers or bank account details.
- Wallet balances are solely for covering ride commissions within the app and are not withdrawable or transferable to a bank account.
5. Data Retention & Account Deletion
We retain your information for as long as necessary to provide our services and comply with our legal obligations.
If you request account deletion, your account will be deactivated immediately. We will then permanently delete your personal information within 30 days of your request, unless we are required by law to retain certain information for a longer period. For example, we may retain certain ride transaction and commission records for up to seven years if required for tax, dispute resolution, or regulatory purposes.
6. Your Rights And Choices Regarding Your Data
- Account Deletion: You have the right to request the deletion of your account at any time by visiting our privacy homepage or contacting support.
- Permissions: You can manage location and contact permissions through your device’s system settings. Please note that changing these settings may impact your use of the Jiren Platform.
- Email, Text, and Push Notifications: You can opt out of receiving promotional emails, text messages, and push notifications through your app or device settings.
7. Children’s Privacy
Jiren is not intended for individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If we become aware that we have collected information from a child, we will take immediate steps to delete that data.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy periodically to reflect changes in our services or legal requirements. We will notify you of any material updates via the Jiren app or through email. By continuing to use the Jiren Platform, you agree to the terms of the most recent version of this policy.
